Portal cranes, also referred to as gantry or goliath cranes operate on floor-mounted rails and are supported by two vertical legs. Semi-portal cranes, in contrast, are configured with one leg on a floor-mounted rail and the other on a structural rail integrated into the building, allowing for more efficient use of space where a full gantry structure is not feasible.
