Crane upgrades
Reliable crane upgrades
We cannot stress that the original design of the crane and its FEM rating must always be taken into consideration before any upgrade can be done. Due to this, our engineers will visit your site and inspect your crane and all historical reports to assess if an upgrade can be achieved.
Crane upgrades can include:
+ New electric hoist and or carriage / crab unit
+ New electrical panel
+ New cable loop system
+ New long travel and cross travel drives
+ Installation of variable speed drives
+ Wheelblock conversions
+ New downshop lead system

New Electric Hoist Unit and or Carriage / Crab Unit
The hoist unit is the heart of the crane, and it is critical that the correct unit is fitted for the right application. Current use and/or future use must be taken into consideration prior to installation. A full duty cycle time analysis must be conducted to determine the correct FEM rating required.
Over the past 33 years we have identified that many hoist units in the market have:
- Been incorrectly supplied and installed for the respective application
- become redundant, therefore, spare parts are unavailable
- have not been maintained and are now uneconomical to repair
- do not conform to FEM / Duty of the crane and/or current operation
- technology used on the hoist is outdated
- hoisting and/or cross travel speeds are incorrect and/or too slow for the operation
Our experienced sales engineers will advise if your hoist will need replacing or upgrading to better meet your requirements, now and in the future. Our unrivalled hoisting units will keep your production and manufacturing process running efficiently and on time.
Electrical Upgrades
With technological advances in the industry, there is no need for you and your company to be left behind. By upgrading your control system to modern PLCs, variable speed drives, and cable loop systems, both downtime and opex can be significantly reduced.
A standard electric feature offered by RGM is our Hoist Monitoring System. RGM’s Hoist Monitoring System is installed with all our new Guralp hoist installations. This unit forms an integral part of monitoring your crane’s usage as well as recording all hoisting and cross travel functions, including:
- total operational hours on hoist and cross travel motions
- of hours the hoist has worked in a 24-hour cycle
- of stop starts the hoist has completed
- of times the hoist was overloaded
- of slow speed up and down functions
- of fast speed up and down functions
- of cross travel slow speed functions
- of cross travel fast speed functions
- of overheating / thermal tripping events
- of times the limit switches have been activated
- of times inching has occurred
Access to this information gives you detailed intelligence about the your crane/s operation. This can help you optimise production flow on your workshop floor, understand and plan future expansion requirements, reduce downtime, reduce repair costs, as well as improve crane operator accountability.

Wheelblock Conversion / Long Travel Upgrade
If your overhead crane has been in operation for years, the long travel wheels may be worn, damaged, and even unsafe. RGM offers a wheelblock conversion to the drive and trailing wheels of your crane. This conversion can be done on site and comes complete with wheelblock, cubicle, connection plates, torque arms, and, where necessary, new long-travel motors.
We will also assess and investigate the reason as to why the wheels were worn and/or damaged in the first place. The wear and tear and/or damage on the wheels can be due to a number of reasons, including over use, lifespan, gantry misalignment, and/or incorrect wheels used from installation.
With this in mind RGM, will conduct a full gantry survey to ascertain if the gantry conforms to local and international standards. In our experience over the past 3 decades, many of the gantries complete with the crane rails are in most cases misaligned and do not conform to SANS 10375. Once a gantry survey is completed, RGM will supply a detailed report of our findings and our engineering department will produce a feasibility and cost recommendation report that will suit your needs. Our wheelblocks, cubicles, and drive motors are all ex-stock and available 24 hours a day.
REDUCE WORKSHOP DOWNTIME
With over R25 Million worth of ex-stock available, RGM is equipped to meet service deliveries and reduce downtime.
A full range of spare parts are readily available and can be delivered to your site within 24 hours, 7 days a week.
